After a 90-minute weather delay, Goose closed their first with new drummer Cotter Ellis, in front of a huge home-state crowd at Westville Music Bowl. After spending the day before solo at a festival, it felt exhilarating to be in the company of several of my closest friends - a few excited for their first Goose show. Our dinner laughter alone would have been enough to sustain me for weeks.
Highlights from the first set (just four songs!) included a great "Butter Rum" - with it's summery tropical vibe. The packed GA floor was swaying in unison, and no longer was anyone worried about weather. First set closer "Rockdale" was epic, leaving fans wide-eyed when the lights came up for set break.
Goin’ down, goin’ down,
Hear the music play,
Gonna leave it on the floor,
Gonna dance these blues away!
Westville's normal curfew extended to 11 pm to accommodate the late start time and the band used every minute. Second set highlights - an incredible jam during "Pancakes", the charming "This Old Sea" and a fun cover of Fatboy Slim's "Praise You".
My favorite song of the evening was the second set closer "The Empress of Organos". Peter's piano solo gave me the chills from the first notes, and the chorus echoed our evening experience.
We know you think that you’re powerful, but we’ve got the love and rhythm,
You say it looks like rain today, but we say, Oh, what a day to be living
One of the best weekends of the summer and the kind that left this music fan full of gratitude.
